Oh Lally, lawdy be!

Joe Lally - Skin and Bone LIVE

Pick of the Day 2/29/08

Happy Leap Day! I've got a good one for you today:

Joe Lally @ Bottletree

Admission: $10
Go Time: 9 p.m.

Joe Lally

Those of you who know Joe Lally as the anchor of Fugazi are going to be in for a surprise when they get to tonight’s show, but it’s a pleasant surprise I assure you. His solo stuff isn’t nearly as frenetic and furious as Fugazi at their heights, but it makes up for it with grooves dressed up in menace.

Pick of the Day 2/28/08

There are weak days in the calendar to be sure, but rare is the day when there is no new thing to be discovered. If you dig deep enough, you will find gems:

Bear Colony @ Cave 9

Admission: 6$
Go Time: 7:00 p.m.

Some folks have told me that I should avoid picking Cave 9 as a destination because you can't drink there. Also, it's full of teenagers (which, if you're a teen, isn't much of a problem). I say if you wanna drink and meet people your own age, go to a bar! If you want to see good music tonight, get over yourself and go to see Bear Colony at Cave 9.

Here's a little clip by a band you may have heard of:

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven LIVE 2007

Concert Poster of the Day 2/28/08

Its grab bag day! Let's see what my grubby little fingers pulled out today:

Radiohead (Red Rocks '03)

Pick of the Day 2/26/08

I got yanked awake by tornado sirens at 4 AM this morning only to discover that my studio was flooding and my computer was sitting in a pool of water. Thankfully, everything is OK, but after plugging back in all of the equipment I so frantically unplugged last night, I have very little time for picks. So I'm just going to throw them out there:

Bill Callahan (of Smog) / Jonathan Meiburg (of Shearwater) @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Do It: 9PM

Video of the Day 2/26/08

Bill Callahan video...NOW:

Bill Callahan - Rock Bottom Riser

Concert Poster of the Day 2/26/08

Tonight's actual poster! It's always fun to put gross and cute together and watch them dance.

Bill Callahan and Jonathan Meiburg (Bottletree '08)

Pick of the Day 2/25/08

It's a strong Monday. Good stuff abounds. Put on your shoes. The dancing kind. Now open your ears:

Leslie & the LY's @ Bottletree

Admission: 12$
Get Down: 9PM

Leslie and the LY's bring disco tinged Hip-Hop about Willow to the table. I'm talking about the movie Willow. I don't know what you brought to the table, but I bet it isn't as delicious as that.

Video of the Day 2/25/08

Cram your eyes full of this:

Leslie and the LY's - How We Go Out (Version 2)

Concert Poster of the Day 2/25/08

This poster is so frickin' fabulous it makes my eyes bleed*.

Leslie and the LY's (The Conservatory '07)

* I would like to apologize for how violent today's posts have been towards eyes. I have nothing against eyes. Nothing it all.

Pick of the Day 2/24/08

It's my Birthday today! Hooray Mom! Good for you, and thanks. Now, what better birthday gift could I recieve than excellent music I was previously unaware of:

Baby Dee @ Bottletree

Admission: 8$
Go Time: 9PM

Achingly beautiful and fragile is the music of former sideshow attraction Baby Dee. It sounds like operatic lullabies played for the children while they sleep. You are not likely to hear or see anything else like this in the near future. This is an opportunity not to be missed, you hear me?

Video of the Day 2/24/08

Here's some of that Baby Dee. I know this is a video, but feel free to close your eyes. This is good music to watch the back of your eyelids with.

Baby Dee - Idumaea

Concert Poster of the Day 2/24/08

This the poster for tonight's event. I'm so glad there are places in town that appreciate and produce good gig posters.

Baby Dee (Bottletree '08)

Pick of the Day 2/23/08

Hooray! One of my favorite bands are back in the Ham:

Sons of Roswell @ The Nick

Admission: $6
Zero Hour: 10 p.m.

Kevin Keenum

I know none of you went to the Sons of Roswell show the last time they were in town, because I went and I was the only one there. Blame it on the bad weather if you want, but if you don’t go this time you are officially out of the cool kids club. Nah, I’m just kidding! Do what you want, but don’t come cryin’ when you realize what you missed.

Honorable Mention: Sweet Dog Experience / The Grenadines @ Bottletree

Video of the Day 2/23/08

Let's hear it for technology! It's not that this song is so great, it's more the execution of the thing that I find cool.

IBAND

Concert Poster of the Day 2/23/08

Had "Shepherd's Dog" on again last night. Gotsta love that one.

Iron and Wine (The Great Salt Air '07)

Pick of the Day 2/22/08

I've been watching Time Life's History of Rock and Roll, and it's a great view with tons of old concert footage and interviews galore. Puts me in the mood for music. Here's some:

Heath Green and the Starmakers @ The Nick

Admission: $6
Go Time: 10 p.m.

Heath Green

It’s more than likely that you’ve seen Heath Green and the Starmakers around town in the past. They play most weeks and at many different venues. Heath Green rocks like Tom Waits, but with brass, and twenty-five less years of booze and smokes. Mostly, he just sounds like a good time.

Video of the Day 2/22/08

I get a kind of "Fear and Loathing" trip gone bad vibe from this video, but that don't mean it ain't fun to watch now, does it?

Heath Green and the Starmakers - Took Off My Head

Concert Poster of the Day 2/22/08

Of all the rockstar interviews I've seen over the last few days, I think Pete Townshend is my favorite. He's smart and grumpy, my favorite combination.

The Who (Olympiahalle '07)

Pick of the Day 2/21/08

Hello everyone! I know it's been a while, and I apologize. I'm back in the saddle now and ready to rock. Here's some picks for ya:

Greg Summerlin @ Workplay

Admission: 10$
Go Time: 8:00 p.m.

Greg Summerlin

Greg Summerlin
plays the kind of melodramatic pop that can turn your whole day around. He’s a local, and signed to Birmingham based Superphonic Records. His tunes would be cute if they didn’t rock as hard as they do. They’re also sprinkled with moments of sad beauty and triumphant hooks. This is far and away the best thing going tonight, so no excuses!

Video of the Day 2/21/08

Greg Summerlin is one of my new favorite local artists, and here's a video for one of the tracks off of his new album:

Greg Summerlin - Unlucky in Love

This the poster for tonight's gig, and All I have to say is that I love that little red bird!

I need a better camera!

Pick of the Day 2/9/08

How about a little pre-Marathon entertainment tonight? Just remember to eat your pasta dinners!

Benjy Davis Project @ Zydeco

Admission: $8
Zero Hour: 10 p.m.

Benji Davis ProjectI know it’s some weird damage on my part, but every time I see a band with someone’s name followed by the word “project”, I immediately become wary. I’m sorry, but it just screams “indulgent side project” to me. Thankfully, that is not the case with Benjy Davis Project. Instead you get solid stuff that’s good to get down to. Let the head bopping commence!

Video of the Day 2/9/08

Video. Here . Now.

Benjy Davis Project - I Love You

Poster. What? Over there!

Benjy Davis Project - (415 Club '04)

Pick of the Day 2/8/08

I'll be posting my pictures from last nights Fiery Furnaces show a little later on, but for now, here are today's picks.

The White Oaks / Matthew Mayfield @ Workplay

Admission: $10
Go Time: 9 p.m.

The White OaksThe White Oaks have had a rapid succession of performances here in recent months, playing the best venues. Somebody out there has figured out that these folks are a good show in the making. They’ve got a grab bag of feel-good rock, traipsing mandolin lines, and jazz tinged upbeat numbers. Plenty of sonic changes for your palate is what I’m trying to say here. Little chance of utter boredom.

Fresh off the break-up of his band Moses Mayfield, Matthew Mayfield is back on Birmingham stages touting some new wares of his own. It’s great stuff, memorable and resonant. It’s difficult to tell if some of the songs are about the band or some romantic attachment, but this is definitely break-up music. But it’s good break-up music! Ahh, the upside of being a songwriter is that every blow you take can be crystallized into music so that you can share it with everyone else in the world. That way it’s not so lonely when you suffer.

Honorable Mention : The Dollyrots @ The Nick

Video of the Day 2/8/09

My dad's in town this weekend, so this is honor of him!

Neil Young - Old Man & Helpless LIVE

Concert Poster of the Day 2/8/08

Pick of the Day 2/7/08

Hey all, due to circumstances beyond my control there were no picks this morning. However, the picks were posted as part of my weekly column at bhamterminal.com. Just click the banner below to see them.

Pick of the Day 2/06/08

Today's pick is sold out, so I'm including a secondary pick for those of you who are unsuccessful at weasling into the show.

Band Of Horses / Cass McCombs and The Middle Class/ Tyler Ramsey @ Bottletree

Admission: 17$
Zero Hour: 9PM

This evening promises to be awash in drifting waves of atmospheric melody, a slightly morose daydream punctuated by momentary strikes of distorted mayhem. Congratulations if you actually have tickets in your grubby little mitts.

SECONDARY PICK: The Big Tasties @ Bailey's

Video of the Day 2/6/08

Vicious Pillow Wars!

Band of Horses - Is There A Ghost

Concert Poster of the Day 2/06/08

Guy Burwell, the creator of this poster, also does some of my favorite Kings of Leon posters.

Band of Horses (Meacham Auditorium '08)

Pick of the Day 2/5/08

A couple of my old city-dwellers are migrating south to Birmingham today. These two Brooklynite bands are solid indie, through and through.

Kevin Devine / The Jealous Girlfriends @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Go Time: 9PM

Video of the Day 2/5/08

Here's Kevin Devine. This is one of those videos that actually make a song better. Not to mention making me nostalgic as hell.

Kevin Devine - Brooklyn Boy

Here's a poster from a previous gig on the Kevin Devine / Jealous Girlfriends tour.

Kevin Devine & The Jealous Girlfriends (Spanish Moon '08)

Pick of the Day 2/4/08

Once again, Workplay throws up a good show to combat Bottletree's ever-great movie night. I think it comes down to scratch today people. If you're poor like me, movie night is free. If you're pockets are weighed down with the moolah, you should get out

Garrison Starr / Over the Rhine @ Workplay

Admission: 15$
Get There: 8PM

Either way, good times will be had by all!

Video of the Day 2/4/08

For those of you who decide to head to Workplay tonight, no need to miss anything. Here in pieces, but in it's entirety, is "Live Forever", the film playing tonight at Bottletree. I don't know how long this will still be available, but for now it should be good.

Live Forever Part I

Live Forever Part II

Live Forever Part III

Live Forever Part IV

Live Forever Part V

Live Forever Part VI

Live Forever Part VII

Live Forever Part VIII

Live Forever Part IX

Live Forever Part X

While we're on the Britpop tip, how's about a little Oasis:

Oasis (Ryman Auditorium '06)

Pick of the Day 2/3/08

What, you mean you aren't going to watch the Superbowl and then pass out from exhaustion brought on by overgorging? What kind of an American are you? The non-hedonistic type you say. A rare breed indeed! Enjoy your tofu and zen gardens, I'm gonna go stuff my face with things. Go Giants!

Video of the Day 2/3/08

Though I am wary of how manipulative this is, I also think it's fairly incredible, so here we go:

Si Se Puede - Yes We Can

Concert Poster of the Day 2/3/08

Colors are pretty.

Phish (Hampton Coliseum '03)

Pick of the Day 2/2/08

Quick Picks...I'm running late today!

Brass Bed / Zach Deputy @ The Nick

Admission: $6
Zero Hour: 10 p.m.

Brass BedBrass Bed can be a bit mischievous at times. They are 3 parts affable indie-pop confectionary and 1 part psych-rock, and they like to lull you with the first before they maraud all over your senses with second. Don’t spend the weekend with your ears unplundered!

Zach DeputyZach Deputy is one more brick in the wall of proof that beards are where the body stores an over-abundance of soul. He’s got plenty of both and the guitar licks to back it up. I love a man who can really rock out on an acoustic. Oh yeah, and he’s got a set of pipes on him, my goodness!

Honorable Mentions: Cinema Electronica @ Bottletree

Video of the Day 2/2/08

Quick, get these people a video before it's too late!

Zach Deputy - Twisty Twisty

Concert Poster of the Day 2/2/08

How cool is this! I know it's technically not a "poster", but still!

Brass Bed (307 Downtown '07)

Pick of the Day 2/1/08

Alright, let the leap month begin! The last dark, crushing month before the beginning of baseball season is finally upon us, but there are plenty of great bands playing to get us through these final days. Like today's pick for instance:

Wiseblood @ Bottletree

Admission: $10
Go Time: 8 p.m.

WisebloodWiseblood is a meeting of creative minds. It contains members of local bands The Ashes, The Bridges and The Spots, and it’s clear that the new mix has had immediate benefits. These guys write great music together, full of grooves yet ready to kick it at a moments notice. There are Edge-like moments of soaring solos mixed with upbeat camp-fire acoustic numbers, as well as a gutsy re-imaging of “the Sound of Silence”, which I didn’t recognize the first time through when I was listening in on their myspace page. I wouldn’t be surprised if we started to see Wiseblood pop up a little more often in the future.

Video of the Day 2/1/08

Wiseblood is a spankin' new band, so no video from them yet. Here's a great Spoon video instead. The chess move is a nice touch.

Spoon - The Underdog

Concert Poster of the Day 2/1/08

Every time I hear the name of this band I think of The Tick. Spoon!

Spoon (Le National '07)
