Pick of the Day (9/30/08): Against Me!

Day 2 of Awesome Week....BEGIN!

Against Me! / Ted Leo & the Pharmacists @ Workplay

Admission: 15$
Get Down: 7:30 PM

Floridian punk rockers Against Me! have made a habit of stomping through Birmingham on their various tours, and I couldn't be happier, especially when they're carrying Ted Leo and the Pharmacists with them for a little extra ass-kicking.

Video of the Day (9/30/08): Against Me!

Seriously, it's great to see a political video that doesn't blindly take sides:

Pick of the Day (9/29/08): Fleet Foxes

This week is gonna be one for the record books. Hear me now, believe me later:

Fleet Foxes / Frank Fairfield @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$ (SOLD OUT)
Go Time: 9PM

Fleet Foxes are one of those bands you're gonna kick yourself later for not seeing. They've already been here to Birmingham once, and now they're back for more. Frank Fairfield is pure old-timey sweetness. I know the show is sold out, but you should beg, borrow or cadge your way into possession of a ticket. For shows of this magnitude, there are often scalpers waiting outside the doors. Bon appetit!

Pictures: The White Oaks & Through The Sparks

Last night turned out to be even more chock full of goodness than I had previously expected. I managed to get some photos taken, but all I've got in the way of a camera is the piece of crap in my cell phone. Still, let the documentation begin:

The White Oaks (Acoustic) - Urban Standard
Through The Sparks - Bottletree

Pick of the Day (9/28/08): Amy LaVere

It makes me happy to pick music in non-traditional venues, and today I'm a happy man:

Amy LaVere @ Vulcan Park

Admission: 8$
Go Time: 3PM

Not only is this sultry voiced bass plucker a great concert, but there will be a featured Microbrew: Terrapin Beer Company. Hooray Beer!

I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!

Pick of the Day (9/27/08): Through The Sparks

This is the show to go to beyond any shadow of a doubt. It's got all the necessaries: it's cheap, it's at a great venue, and it's got top-notch local acts:

Through The Sparks / The Grenadines @ Bottletree

Admission: 5$ (3$ with a Sidewalk stub)
Go Time: 10:30

What are you still waiting for? Go Go Go Go Go!

Honorable Mention: Yelawolf @ The Nick

This is a video by tonight's honorable mention:

Pick of the Day (9/26/08): The Queers

What! I forgot to update the sidebar listings! Well, I'll get right on it!

The Queers / Backseat Virgins @ The High Note

Admission: 10$
Starting: 8PM

The High Note doesn't make it into this post very often, but what with some major venues taking the night off (Sidewalk-itis), they're sliding into the spotlight. The Queers are a very long-tenured bubblegum punk band. They formed in 1982, for crying out loud, though the lineup tonight doesn't resemble the band of yore. It should still be a pretty good time, especially when you add in Backseat Virgins, a local band who sound like they grew up on Queers records.

Pick of the Day (9/25/08): Needtobreathe

Workplay finally jumps into the pool:

Needtobreathe / Andy Davis / Matthew Mayfield @ Workplay

Admission: 12$
Be There: 8PM

It had been my plan to stray away from the music tonight and recommend Lewis Black at the BJCC, but that show has been canceled, so instead we've got a show that will be good, but is a little slick for my taste. Local Matthew Mayfield will be good, and Needtobreathe is probably better live than in the the over-produced material on their myspace.

Admission: 10$
Go There: 8PM

Bottletree hits it on the nose again! Thank the lizard for that place.

PINBACK in Pictures

Last night, my showtog George and I got to see Pinback live at Workplay! These pics are okay (they kept aiming a projector straight at the dudes's faces and not the screen behind them)but the music was INCREDIBLE. Still reeling from hearing "Fortress" in person for the first time ever!

Also, the members of Pinback took time out to mention their keyboardist's rough battle with cancer which has taken him off tour. If you want more info or want to support the charitable foundation they've started to help Terrin Durfey, click here.

Here's the view from my fangirl dreams. All photos courtesy of George Atkinson.

Pick of the Day (9/22/08): Ain't Nothin'

Ain't nothin' going on tonight except some terrible grammer on my part. I suggest filling bottles with varying levels of liquid and having a blow at it.

Video of the Day (9/23/08): Sioen

When this one started out, I wasn't sure about it, but then it just killed in the end. Give it time.

Pick of the Day (9/22/08): The Gaslight Anthem

Whew, I'm back! Happy Monday everyone:

The Gaslight Anthem / American Steel / O Pioneers!!! @ Bottletree

Admission: 14$
Time: 7PM

The Gaslight Anthem have resurrected the Asbury Park era Bruce Springsteen and forced him to dance. Don't worry though, The Boss is liking it!

Honorable Mention: Pinback @ Workplay

More Rest Needed

5...more....minutes.....Mom....zzzzzzz......back......tomorrow.....

Apologies

Hello everyone. Sorry to disappoint, but I'm taking a much needed break today. There are shows at Bottletree, Cave 9 and The Nick that on first glance might have some promise. By all means head to our links page and check out the situation for yourself.

See y'all tomorrow.

Pick of the Day (9/19/08): Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez

Bottletree is back in the mix with a couple of Baltimore bands and some folks from home I've already featured this week:

Jana Hunter / Lesser Gonzales Alvarez / Broken Letters

Admission: 10$
Go Time: 9PM

If you missed the Broken Letters show earlier this week, or the interview and pics Whitney posted earlier, than you get a second chance tonight. On top of which you get some excellent indie-folk out of Baltimore. I've been to the aquarium, have you been to the aquarium, AQUARIUM!!!

Pick of the Day (9/18/08): Bright Henry

That's right! Shameless self-promotion is what we're all about here at r3vrb, and so in that spirit I would like to announce that my band is the pick of the day today. Say what you will, but I pick the best band available, and I believe we are it. What?!

Bright Henry / Nicholas Megalis / Vera @ Zydeco

Admission: 10$
Get There: 7PM

See you there! Woooo!

Pick of the Day (9/17/08): Down Time

Well, not much going on this evening. There's a hip-hop throw down at the nick, but only half of Green Seed is gonna be there, and I ain't buyin'. Have a nice one!

Video of the Day (9/17/08): The Little Fella

Once again, cute twisted things have their day in the spotlight here:

PICTURE POST: Broken Letters show at Cave9

Despite the rain, I caught the tail end of the Broken Letters show at Cave 9 on Sunday night, 9/14. It brought me back to the days of watching Plate Six at Two Way and the Boiler Room.

PICTURED: David Hickox on guitar/vocals, Brad Davis on drums. Matt Whiston on bass (not pictured).

Pick of the Day (9/16/08): Kate Taylor

With out a doubt, the best and only show worth seeing tonight is:

Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby / Kate Taylor @ The Nick

Admission: 8$
Be There: 10PM

Having achieved cult status for a single he released in 1978, Wreckless Eric now lives in France with his wife, Amy Rigby. They're a long way from home, so come on down and hear what they've got. It's all gravy anyway, 'cause Kate Taylor is on the bill, and that's good enough for me.

Pick of the Day (9/15/08): Ari Hest

Though the horizon may be dark, and the obstacles in front of us treacherous and vast, we can all be glad that each night we are able to venture out together into the night to find solace in music. Music: the universal language, the soundtrack we build to accompany our lives. Who among you has no song that will bring you to tears, or to your feet?

K.S. Rhoads / Ari Hest @ Workplay

Admission: 10$
Get There: 8PM

Workplay has had it's share of sing-writer acts that drifted over the "cheese" line, but these two fellas aren't on that list, earnest though they may be. Welcome to Monday.
