Pick of the Day (8/31/08): Marshall Ruffin

This is the perfect Sunday Show, groove down but with a little funk and a dash of soul:

Heath Green and the Starmakers / Marshall Ruffin @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Time: 10PM

Both of these guys have got old-time class. Soul mixing with sin.

Video of the Day (8/31/08): Marshall Ruffin

Oooh, this one isn't kidding around, no sir!

Marshall Ruffin - Cold Wind Blow

Concert Poster of the Day (8/31/08): The Black Keys

You can always count on The Black Keys for a good poster:

The Black Keys (Metro '08)* by Dan Grzeca

Pick of the Day (8/30/08): Old Union

I'm not pleased with today at all, but it'll do.

Old Union @ Zydeco

Admission: 8$
It Starts: 10PM

Old Union should be a genuinely enjoyable show. At least it's not a totally empty Saturday.

Video of the Day (8/30/08): Beck

This is a video for a remix of Hell Yes. I always liked the original video with the dancing robots, so it's cool that a whole new realm of awesome is open to me now.

Beck - Ghettochip Malfunction (Hell Yes)

Concert Poster of the Day (8/30/08): Gnarls Barkley

I love being terrorized by cute things:

Gnarls Barkely (Fillmore @ Irving Plaza '08) * by Micah Smith

Pick of the Day (8/29/08): Laura Reed and Deep Pocket

Got a little soul for ya, a little rock, a little bag of shut up and listen:

Laura Reed and Deep Pocket / Squirrelhouse @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Time: 10PM

I should warn you, there are a few other bands on the bill tonight, and though they're not ear-bleeding material, they're also not up to caliber.

Video of the Day (8/29/08): Idol

A little bird just dropped this in my lap. It's still festering now.

Sclah - Idol

Concert Poster of the Day (8/29/08): Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon

Angry fishies.

Pick of the Day (8/28/08): Spoonfed Tribe

This is turning into one of the best weeks over:

Spoonfed Tribe / Sandia @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Be There: 10PM

Spoonfed Tribe took me by complete surprise, and there is still something slightly annoying about them, but they drown it out with huge jutting waves of complex metal melodies.

Honorable Mention: The Triceratops / Modern Skirts / Matthew Mayfield @ Bottletree

Video of the Day (8/28/08): Spoonfed Tribe

Here we go with the freakness:

Spoonfed Tribe - 2 Fat Cats in a Big White House

Concert Poster of the Day (8/28/08): Radiohead and Drugstore

I recently rediscovered an old Drugstore album I used to be in love with. Turns out I still am a bit.

Radiohead and Drugstore (Slim's '01) * by John Seabury

Pick of the Day (8/27/08): The Spots

Workplay doesn't want Bottletree to get all of the credit this week, so they've jumped into the mix with a decent contender:

Drew Holcomb / Katie Herzig / The Spots @ Workplay

Admission: 10$
Zero Hour: 8PM

Local band The Spots may lack vocals, but they make up for it in sweet air-funk goodness. The other two both merit your attention as well, so click click click.

Video of the Day (8/27/08): Kaite Herzig

Utterly charming:

Song-After-Shoot: Katie Herzig

Concert Poster of the Day (8/27/08): Ben Folds

Who named this amphitheatre?Ben Folds (Koka Booth Amphitheatre '08) * by Chris Williams

Pick of the Day (8/26/08): Kaiser Cartel

Today's pick should prove to bit mellower than yesterday. Just what the Tuesday ordered.

Kaiser Cartel / John P. Strohm @ Bottletree

Admission: 7$
Go Time: 9PM

Thank the lizard! Bottletree is finally back up to steam. They've got Monday and Tuesday under their belt already. Who knows what could be in store for us? I've got goosebumps. NOT goosepimples. Goosepimples are gross.

Video of the Day (8/26/08): Kaiser Cartel

This is a perfectly executed simple idea:

KaiserCartel - Okay

Concert Poster of the Day (8/26/08): Kaiser Cartel

This reminds me of the illustrations in a scary series of books I used to read as a kid, but I can't for the life of me remember what they were called.

Pick of the Day (8/25/08): Love As Laughter

I'm feeling groovy, and I'll tell you why. It's Monday and yet, surprise, there is a great show going down:

Love as Laughter / Oxford Collapse @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
It Starts: 8PM

I can't decide which of these bands I like more, and that's a good thing. Love As Laughter is smoother and sweeter than Oxford Collapse (like you couldn't tell that from the names), but both play dynamically structured rock with plenty of peaks to dance on and valleys to chill in. Have a good week!

Video of the Day (8/25/08): Oxford Collapse

I think the DIY aesthetic suits these guys just fine:

Oxford Collapse - Please Visit Your National Parks

Pick of the Day (8/24/08): Well Deserved Rest

Music gets the day off today, and for the first time in a while, I'm not complaining about this. We've had so many great tunes in town over the last few days, it's amazing I'm still standing. So pull those covers back up over your head for a little more snooze time. I'll see y'all tomorrow.

Video of the Day (8/24/08): Heard 'Em Say

I just discovered this, so sorry if y'all have seen it already:

Heard 'Em Say - Kanye West & Adam Levine

Concert Poster of the Day (8/24/08): Kanye West

A tad literal:

Pick of the Day (8/23/08): Stokin' The Fire Festival (Day 2)

Another smoke filled day arrives. Today kick's yesterday all over the place.

Pick of the Day (8/22/08): Stokin' The Fire Festival (Day 1)

Oh yeah! Today brings day one of Sloss Furnaces' Stokin' The Fire BBQ and Music Festival. My mouth is salivating and my ears are...doing whatever ears do when they're hungry. Today is the lighter day, but I'll be at both:

Get there early for the chow, but stay late to ensure you don't miss Todd Snider. He's the best of the bunch by far.

Video of the Day (8/22/08): Todd Snider

Psychedelics and athletics are apparently a potent combination:

Todd Snider - America's Favorite Pastime

Concert Poster of the Day (8/22/08): Todd Snider

I really love this one, gloomy though it is.

Todd Snider (Sheldon Concert Hall '08) * by John Vogl

Pick of the Day (8/21/08): Baak Gwai

And the good times keep on coming! An evening chock full of rock:

Baak Gwai / Sound & Shape / Sons Of Roswell / Joan Of Arkansas / Suburban Love Junkies @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Go Time: 10PM

First of all, the sheer number of bands you get with a measly ten bucks is astounding. That's two bucks a band folks! On top of that, it's a special occasion. Baak Gwai is throwing a CD release party and you're all invited. If you're still not excited, than perhaps the return of Sons of Roswell with their brand new lead singer will get your blood moving. Still nothing? Check your pulse, you might be dead.

Video of the Day (8/21/08): Sons of Roswell

Here, the Sons get interviewed at Bonnaroo by a plastic face and then melt it:

Saturday Noon - Sons of Roswell

Concert Poster of the Day (8/21/08): Baak Gwai

Even though the date and venue are wrong, I assure this is the poster for tonight's pick. Wonder what happened?

Baak Gwai (Mellow Mushroom '08) * by ?

Pick of the Day (8/20/08): Audrye Sessions

And we're off! Tonight Bottletree picks up the ball again with a really great show that's something for most.

Kate Taylor / Margot & The Nuclear So And So's / Audrye Sessions @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Get Down: 8PM

Margot & The Nuclear So And So's are a perfectly good Indie band. In fact, they're a little better, because they don't completely shun accessible forms, but the real showstopper here is Audrye Sessions, and glorious melodic rock band of epic scope. It's a bit grandiose, but that doesn't matter as long as you get swept up in it, which I certainly did.

Video of the Day (8/20/08): Audrye Sessions

Audrye Sessions picks it up and runs with it:

Audrye Sessions - The Paper Face

Here's a weird little gem:
