Pick of the Day (7/31/08): Vulture Whale

I need a day off. There is a good show today:

The Photonicas / Vulture Whale / and some other folks @ Cave 9.

I'm going to bed, google them yourselves. Don't worry I'll be back up to full speed tomorrow. No video of poster today.

Pick of the Day (7/30/08): Fearful Pleading

Depressingly, we have reached our third day without some decent music for y'all. Please, if you have the ears of the music gods in this town, cry out for sustenance! Gods of Rock! Rain your precious riffs down upon our wilting ears so that we might burn the atrocities of the work week from our fevered brains. Amen.

Video of the Day (7/30/08): Bright Henry

Today I'm posting the second of the videos Bright Henry recorded during our "Odeyville Sessions".

Bright Henry - Kings of the Mountain (Odeyville Sessions)

Concert Poster of the Day (7/30/08): Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend. Great summer music.

Vampire Weekend (Fillmore Miami '08) * by Delicious Design League

Pick of the Day (7/29/08): Head Scratching

Nothing musically very interesting today, though you stargazers among us may wish to head down to Zydeco to check out Billy Bob Thornton's country band The Boxmasters. It's not great music though, and I'm sure being near an aging celebrity will lose it's charm after only a short period of time. Bottletree has a free reading to celebrate the release of Sean Carswell's new thang "Train Wreck Girl". Otherwise you can all join me in a bit of puzzled head-scratching.

Video of the Day (7/28/08): Le Building

Short and sweet (in a destructive sort of way):

Concert Poster of the Day (7/29/08): The Black Keys

Black Keys = Good:

The Black Keys (The Crystal Ballroom '08) * by Guy Burwell

Pick of the Day (7/28/08): Blank

Another dead day. Bottletree does have a craft night going. It's free to get in, so if you feel like creating something from nothing, get it on down. Otherwise you're out of luck.

Video of the Day (7/28/08): Sno-bo

Here's a twisted little gem I found ages ago but never posted:

Sno-Bo - Vera Brosgol & Jenn Kluska

Pick of the Day (7/27/08): Your Vegas

For those of you who came out to last nights shin-dig at Bottletree, thanks! We had a great time playing, and I should have some pictures up later for those of you who missed out. Now, on to today:

Your Vegas @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Time: 10PM

Your Vegas plays soaring melodic rock full of lush arrangments and driving beats. They don't distinguish themselves from the masses of other bands attempting to pull off this sound, but at least they do it with style and talent.

Video of the Day (7/27/08): Your Vegas

Here's some Your Vegas for you:

Your Vegas - In My Head

Concert Poster of the Day (7/27/08): The Raconteurs

Couldn't find a good Your Vegas poster, so I got a Raconteurs one instead:

The Raconteurs (Spaziale Festival '08) * by Dirk Fowler

Pick of the Day (7/26/08): Bright Henry

It pleases me greatly to announce that tonight I am the pick of the day (well...me and some other folks!). Here's what I'm talking about:

Bright Henry / Sorry Saints / Green Seed / Vulture Whale @ Bottletree

Admission: 14$
Go Time: 8PM

The band that I have been toiling in the wee hours with some of my good friends is named Bright Henry. We rock. It's that simple. Come out and see us. If that's not enough for your jaded soul, then perhaps I can entice you with the offer of three other great acts. Each of them would be reason enough to get you up off the couch. Still not interested? How about a little compassionate generosity? The proceeds from this show benefit one of the greatest websites to ever come out of Birmingham. That's right, I'm talking about The Terminal, Birmingham's one and only hub for local information and conversation. If you haven't already started reading it, than take this opportunity to start. If you care about Birmingham at all, you oew it to yourself to check it out.

Oh, yeah. There's another show tonight. Maybe you heard about it?

Honorable Mention: Wild Sweet Orange / The White Oaks / Monarchs
@ Workplay

Video of the Day (7/26/08): Bright Henry

Wondering what I look like when I rock out in the country side?

Bright Henry - No Regrets

Concert Poster of the Day (7/26/08): Sorry Saints

To my everlasting chagrin, Bright Henry didn't make it onto this poster because we were a late addition to the show, but here it is none the less:

Sorry Saints (The Bottletree '08) * by ?

Pick of the Day (7/25/08): Dexter Romweber Duo

Man, this show is gonna kick you in the good place:

Dexter Romweber Duo / The Honky Tonk Hustlas / Marshall Ruffin @ The Nick

Admission: ?
Boogie Time: 10PM

The Nick does it for the second day in a row, and this time they're pulling out all the stops.
Dexter Romweber Duo are the best of the bunch, with a raspy nostalgic charm and plenty of energy to burn. That's not to discount the other fellas on the bill. They're just a bit mellower, and I'm in the mood to burn the house down.

Video of the Day (7/25/08): Dexter Romweber Duo

Here's Dexter explaining himself:

Dexter Romweber Duo - Dreamed of Heaven + Interviews

Concert Poster of the Day (7/25/08): Dexter Romweber Duo

I almost hesitate to put this poster up. Almost.

Dexter Romweber Duo (Joes Palace '06) * by Mariano Chavez

Pick of the Day (7/24/08): Nobody Again

I guess today is this week's attempt to make up for the last two days of miserable emptiness. The pick of the litter is:

Harrison Hudson / Riverleft @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Get Down: 10PM

Harrison Hudson gets the nod today because, although noone playing tonight really blew me away, these guys at least got my foot tap revved up. Check out the slew of Honorable Mentions too!

Honorable Mention: Broken Letters @ Bottletree
Rodeo Ruby Love @ Cave 9
Jim Bianco @ Workplay
Zappa Plays Zappa @ Workplay Studios

Video of the Day (7/24/08): Harrison Hudson

Puppets make everything better:

Harrison Hudson - Kill Her With A Kiss

Concert Poster of the Day (7/24/08): Broken Letters

Local band Broken Letters has a new tour poster!

Broken Letters (US Tour '08) * by Aaron Gemmill

Pick of the Day (7/23/08): Nobody Again

This is getting really disheartening. I know it's not realistic to expect great music every day, but for two days in a row now most of the venues are without tunes. The Nick has a show, but I wouldn't get within 200 yards of that show if I were you. I guess we'll just have to suffer through the silence together.

Video of the Day (7/23/08): In the Rough

I know this has nothing to do with music, but I needed a little cheering up:

In The Rough - Blur Studios

Concert Poster of the Day (7/23/08): Radiohead

I spent a lot of time talking about Radiohead this last weekend, so I've had them on my brain a bit:Radiohead (Cruz Ampitheatre '08) * by Jermaine Rogers

The Burly Earl Goes Down

I discovered during my morning feed perusal that one of Birmingham's local music haunts has locked it's doors for the final time. Though the Burly Earl has been under new ownership for a while, and had made recent efforts to turn itself into a respectable live music venue, I guess things just never worked out. So..so long Burly Earl, you and your delicious vittles will be missed. I'll leave up their banner in the links section for a few weeks so that y'all can reminisce if you like.

Pick of the Day (7/22/08): Nobody

Unbelievable. Everybody is empty today. Bottletree, Workplay, The Nick, Zydeco and Cave 9 are all void of any music today. How incredibly disappointing. There is an open mic at Marty's if you feel like showing off your own skills.

Video of the Day (7/22/08): Feist on Sesame Street

Charming and adorable, that's what this is:

Feist - 1234 on Sesame Street

Concert Poster of the Day (7/22/08): Feist

A colorful many-layered heart for you, from me:

Feist (Tower Theater '07) * by Largemammal Print

Pick of the Day (7/21/08): Old 97's @ Workplay

Well, I was away for the weekend, but I hope y'all enjoyed yourselves. We're gonna start off the week with some straight up rock goodness:

Old 97's / Sleepercar @ Workplay

Admission: 20$
Be There: 8PM

I really am exhausted from a weekend of recording, so I'm just gonna say this: Click on the myspace links. Have a listen. If you like, go!

Video of the Day (7/21/08): Old 97's

This video must have been a blast to film:

Another great Scrojo poster from The Belly Up:

Pick of the Day (7/20/08): Void

Hello? Can anyone hear anything? Is there anybody out there? No. Well then, I'm just gonna sit here in my box and brood. Enjoy your vacuum.

Video of the Day (7/20/08): SDP

I love this video even though I can't understand a bit of German:

SDP - Anfang Anzufangen

Concert Poster of the Day (7/20/08): Wilco

Pick of the Day (7/19/08): Baak Gwai @ Speakeasy

Baak Gwai is back again!

Baak Gwai @ Speakeasy

Admission: ?
Zero Hour: 9PM

It's about time these Tuscaloosa rockers returned to our fair burg. Here's to Speakeasy for booking some great bands recently.

Honorable Mention: The Gay Blades @ The Nick

Video of the Day (7/19/08): Weird Al

I dare you not to laugh.

Weird Al - Trapped In The Drive-Thru

Concert Poster of the Day (7/19/08): Baak Gwai

Not sure on the date for this one or who it's by:

Baak Gwai (The Nick)

Pick of the Day (7/18/08): Cary Ann Hearst @ Bottletree

I glad Bottletree is finally getting into the mix this week:

Sleepy Horses / Cary Ann Hearst / Thrift Store Cowboys @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Be There: Not Sure (Bottletree's site has it listeed at 11 AM, which can't be right)

The real find here is Carrie Ann Hearst. This girl wails soulful blues that make me want to get down on my knees and shout at the top of my lungs. Sweet money butter.

Video of the Day (7/18/08): Cary Ann Hearst

Just listen to this girl holler:

Cary Ann Hearst - Dust and Bones

Concert Poster of the Day (7/18/08): Thrift Store Cowboys

As per usual, a poster for a band that's playing tonight:

Thrift Store Cowboys (Jake's Backroom '07) * by Dirk Fowler

Pick of the Day (7/17/08): Quiet Company @ The Nick

It's rare that the Nick has this many bands in one line-up that I am actively interested in seeing:

Cohen & The Ghost / Quiet Company / Jesse Payne @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Get There: 10PM

Jesse Payne was featured here last week and he's already back on the post. The other two are both worth clicking on. Especially Quiet Company. Yes indeedy.

Honorable Mention: Tony Joe White @ Workplay

Video of the Day (7/17/08): Quiet Company

Hey hey, I really like this band, don't ya know.

Quiet Company - Fashionabel

Concert Poster of the Day (7/17/08): Cohen and The Ghost

Here's a poster for a very recent concert by today's pick Cohen & The Ghost:

Cohen and The Ghost (Spanish Moon '08) * by Scott Campbell

Pick of the Day (7/16/08): Reed Pittman @ The Nick

Wednesday needs to start picking up some ground. Monday is kicking it's ass.

Reed Pittman & The Rest @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Time: 10PM

The last time Reed Pittman was picked for this post, Bottletree and Workplay had taken the day off, and today is the same situation. No matter, long as there is something to listen to that won't make your ears bleed. Reed is gonna be like a soft ear massage with no bleeding whatsoever.

Video of the Day (7/16/08): Reed Pittman

Check out some Reed Pittman:

Reed Pittman - Blindsided

Pick of the Day (7/15/08): Medeski, Martin & Wood @ Workplay

There's quite a buzz going on about tonight's pick, so naturally it's sold out. Don't worry yet. There are any number of ways to procure a ticket post sell-out, including Craig's List, Stub Hub and just plain out buying from a scalper.

Mediski, Martin & Wood @ Workplay

Admission: SOLD OUT
Be There: 8PM

I saw Chris Wood with his brother at Workplay a few weeks ago (under the moniker "The Wood Brothers) and it was one of the best shows I've seen there. This one should prove to be no less great, so if you can weasel your way indoors, you'll be one happy little rodent. For those without the wiles, here's and honorable mention:

Honorable Mention: Drew Holcomb @ The Veranda

Video of the Day (7/15/08): Mediski, Martin and Wood

If you can't get into the show, at least you can watch this video:

Mediski, Martin and Wood - Uninvisible

Pick of the Day (7/14/08): Nobody

Stay home. Go outside. Make your own damn music.

Video of the Day (7/14/08): Sub

Here's a great video I recently discovered:

Sub - Jesse Schmal

Concert Poster of the Day (7/14/08): The Hold Steady

A little Hold Steady to celebrate their new album:

The Hold Steady (40 Watt '07) * by Tate Millerton

Pick of the Day (7/13/08): Wes McDonald @ Rojo

Sorry folks, but I'm just too tired at the moment to generate this posts usual drivel. Here's your info:

Wes McDonald / Sparrow / Jon Vogel @ Rojo

Admission: Free
Get There: 6PM

Yeah, that about does it for me. Don't take my lackluster energy for non-interest. These are good bands. Take a listen.

Video of the Day (7/13/08): Wes McDonald

Wes McDonald rocks hard:

Concert Poster of the Day (7/13/08): Beck

Pick of the Day (7/12/08): Jesse Payne / Red Mouth @ Speakeasy

I'm rubbing my greedy little mitts together. Wanna know why?

Jesse Payne
/ Red Mouth @ Speakeasy

Admission: ?
Go Time:9PM

These guys couldn't be less alike. Local fella Jesse Payne plays lush sweeping melodic rock and Alabama native Red Mouth plays dirty homegrown blues, but they both break it down with style.

Video of the Day (7/12/08): Jesse Payne

Here's a nicely done video by Jesse Payne:

Jesse Payne - Skeletons

Concert Poster of the Day (7/12/08): American Cheeseburger

It's great to see a good old fashioned hand-drawn deal:

Wiseblood on AL.com

Local blogger / columnist Mary Colurso has a nice interview with Wiseblood on AL.com, so head on by there to check it out.

I was unable to attend their CD release show at Bottletree yesterday, so for those of you who did manage to attend, send me any pictures and videos you may have taken and I will post them here.

Thanks in advance!

Pick of the Day (7/11/08): John-Alex Mason @ Marty's

It's great to have tonight's venue back in this post once again. I love Marty's. It's the first place I played here in Birmingham, Marty is a likeable fella, and his Cheeseburgers make my knees weak.

John-Alex Mason @ Marty's

Admission: 5$
Get There: 10PM (I think, Marty's site was down when I checked)

I don't know where John-Alex Mason got his blues, but man he's got 'em good. Real good, you know what I mean. So good I'm gonna sit and listen to him some more after I get through writing this, cause I haven't had enough yet.

Honorable Mention: Sorry Lee Harvey @ The Burly Earl
Grey Haven @ Workplay

Pick of the Day (7/10/08): Lucero @ Bottletree

So far, this week has been going strong, and tonight is no excpetion:

Lucero / Glossary / Wiseblood (CD Release Party) @ Bottletree

Admission: 15$
Doors Open: 8PM

Not only is this yet another great rock show for the week's tally, but it also marks the CD Release of another r3vrb favorite: local band Wiseblood. Come on out and support y'all.

Honorable Mention: Broken Letters @ Cave 9
