Pick of the Day 3/31/08

Musically speaking, today is dry as a bone. The rest of the world looks like it's fixin' to get wet, but except for a few regular standby spots, there is very little going on tonight. I hate doing this, but I recommend that you stay home tonight. Put some new tunes on and have a listen. There have been a ton of great new album releases in the past weeks, so pick your poison and crank it up to 11. Here are a few of my personal favorite new releases:

The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
The Black Keys - Attack & Release
The Black Crowes - Warpaint
Counting Crows - Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings
R.E.M. - Accelerate

That ought to keep you busy until tomorrow. Ta.

Laser Tag!!!!!!!! New Black Keys!!!!!!! Please excuse me while I recover from this minor brain hemorrhage.

The Black Keys - Strange Times

Concert Poster of the Day 3/31/08

Bad to the ass. Mad to the bone. I rock by myself in a room all alone.

The Black Keys (Majestic Theatre '07)

Pick of the Day 3/30/08

Today was a rough one, but how can I withstand the force of nature that is:

Jill Scott @ Boutwell Auditorium

Admission: 45$
Go Time: 7PM

Jill Scott has one of the greatest voices ever gifted to a human being. It's so powerful it can make you weep, a voice subtle and sly, sweet and playful. She can jazzify, she can funk it, and she can blow out the back of your skull (in a good way).

Video of the Day 3/30/08

I decided to go with an older video of Jill Scott's, but this has got to be one of my favorite's.

Jill Scott - Golden

Concert Poster of the Day 3/30/08

Here's a poster that I've had in my collection of images for a while, but it's really the only decent Jill Scott sheet.

Jill Scott (Belly Up '04)

Pick of the Day 3/39/08

All apologies for not getting the picks up yesterday. Know that if it's the weeekend, the picks will still be up on The Terminal's Timetable. Here's your consolation prize:

Grayson Capps and the Stumpknockers @ The Nick

Admission: $7
Zero Hour: 10 p.m.

Greyson Capps

Lucky for us, Greyson Capps has the bachelor blues, and the only way he has to get it out is to play country tinged blues till he forgets his woes. Not that you could tell from his mug to the right. When it comes down to it, if a man can sing, and he’s singin’ the blues, I’ll listen a spell.

Video of the Day 3/29/08

These kinds of activist vids don't usually get to me, but this one did manage to nab me a bit. Ladies and Gentleman, Grayson Capps.

Grayson Capps - New Orleans Waltz

Concert Poster of the Day 3/29/08

I bet this was a great show, and a great moment for Birdstuff. He had his band perched in his Bottletree.

Man or Astro-man? (Bottletree '06)

Pick of the Day 3/27/08

Another day, another dime, another drop in the bucket of time. Still pickin':

The Gourds @ Zydeco

Admission: 10$
Go Time: 10:00 p.m.

The Gourds

The Gourds are a grab bag. They’ve got a little bit of good ol’ bluegrass, a touch of jam, and a whole lot of rootsy get-down. These guys came up out of the Austin scene and have been doin’ their thang for a while now, and recently got some spotlight on NPR. It’s mellow, and it’s groovy, the perfect way to start of the weekend.

Video of the Day 3/27/08

Normally I'd give you a Gourds video here, but I just discovered this new video from the latest Raconteurs album Consolers of the Lonely. Holy mother of all things rock and roll. Screaming dervishes fueled by fury!

The Raconteurs - Salute Your Solution

Concert Poster of the Day 3/27/08

Simple but lookin' good.

The Raconteurs (Abc '06)

Pick of the Day 3/26/08

I'll take a salvation story from a man who's walked through fire. Especially when he's backed up by a local favorite:

Mike Ferris / Matthew Mayfield @ Workplay

Admission: 10$
Go Time: 8PM

WARNING: There is a third act sandwiched between these two, of the attrocious christian pop-rock variety. I advise you to make your way to the bar for this segment.

Video of the Day 3/26/06

Here's a live clip of Mike Ferris, so you can get a feel for the gospely goodness.

Mike Ferris - Sit Down Servent / Selah! Selah!

Concert Poster of the Day 3/26/08

Couldn't find a poster for either of today's picks, so I'm going with an old one from a local venue:

Great Lake Swimmers (Bottletree '07)

Pick of the Day 3/25/08

I'm still stuck in bed, though I think I'm on the tail end of this thing. Feeling a little oogly hasn't stopped me yet!

Admission: 2o$
Go Time: 10PM

The 20$ ticket price is 'cause of The Bravery, but the real reason to check the show out is Tuscaloosa natives Baak Gwai, who are always a r3vrb favorite. I'm going back to sleep now. Talk at ya tomorrow.

Pick of the Day 3/24/08

Hello my beloved readers. I am laid out in bed today with the flu, so I hope you can all forgive me for how late I'm posting these. And now, without further ado:

Martin Royle / Stars @ Workplay

Admisssion: 15$
Be There: 8PM

I was wary of Martin Royle at first, but all fears were assuaged. He's got theatrical style, but he will scream into the mike just when he's lulled you into a false sense of security. At once fragile and imperturbable, a wall that crumbles and rebuilds.

Stars is a similar experience, though not in a sonic way. Their arrangements are so lush, and beats so dancable that it's easy to call it all fluff, but the more you delve, the deeper it goes. They do share a theatrical sensibility with Martin, and should you go I think you will be thoroughly entertained.

I will unable to attend, 'cause I'm stuck in bed, so if anybody goes and feels like reporting back to me with details (or photos), I would gladly accept them. No video or poster today guys, I'm feeling kinda woozy.

Night.

Pick of the Day 3/23/08

**EASTER EDITION**

It turns out Easter is a bad day for going out, but for those who want to get their groove on after a day of reverance I have some additional salvation:

Frankie Velvet and The Mighty Veltones @ Metro Bistro

Admission: ?
Go Time: 8PM

The swingin' kickers of shit are here to save us all...from the drudgery of an empty evening.

Video of the Day 3/23/08

Old Uncle Waits is here with an Easter message for the kiddies:

Tom Waits - Chocolate Jesus

This has actually been a Video of the Day before, but it's just so...appropriate.

Concert Poster of the Day 3/23/08

A halloween poster from The Nick a few years ago. Bad to the ass.

Immortal Lee County Killers (The Nick '05)

Pick of the Day 3/22/08

Oh man, it's gonna be another beautiful day today. Make sure you get yourself some sun before you head indoors for:

The Broken Letters @ Bottletree

Admission: $9
Zero Hour: 9 p.m.

THe Broken Letters

The Broken Letters are locals worth loving. Their stuff can be as methodical as a funeral march, but it doesn’t drag, nor is it a drag. They have a new album coming out soon, and you will probably get a pretty good sneak peek if you come out to the show tonight. Be the first among your friends!

Video of the Day 3/22/08

I couldn't find a Broken Letters video, so here's the new single from Gnarls Barkley instead.

Gnarls Barkley - Run

Concert Poster of the Day 3/22/08

This is tonight's poster. Thank the lizard every day that there is a venue who consistently puts out great posters for us to peruse.

Broken Letters (Bottletree '08)

Pick of the Day 3/21/08

Happy Friday! Let's see what's on the menu for today:

Taylor Hollingsworth / The N.E.C. @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Go Time: 10 p.m.

Taylor HollingsworthThe N.E.C.

C’mon now, y’all know Taylor Hollingsworth by this point. He’s appeared in this post many times, and is ever present in our local bars. This guy shreds it with proficiency and a rock n’ roll heart. Take every chance you get to see him. I ain’t foolin’.

Next, get ready for some grit, courtesy of Atlanta garage rockers The N.E.C.. This is the rock equivalent of rolling in the mud for a while. It’s dirty, but it feels so good, and you might look a mess when you’re through. Don’t wear the nice shirt.

Video of the Day 3/21/08

This here video is for the first single off of The Black Crowes new disc. It's good to hear those guys back again. Robinsons unite!

The Black Crowes - Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution

Concert Poster of the Day 3/21/08

Not much to say. Plenty to see:

Taylor Hollingsworth (The Orpheum '06)

Pick of the Day 3/20/08

Hey, hey, hey! What's happening. You say nothing, I say wrong!

The Legendary Shack Shakers @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Get There: 9PM

Legendary Shack Shakers

Jello Biafra once called J.D. Wilkes, the lead singer of The Legendary Shack Shakers, "...the last great Rock and Roll frontman", and apparently Robert Plant is also in their fan camp. Comin' straight out of Nashville to cram your skull full of blues harp and rock-a-billy, these guys bring the energy live, so get ready to sweat. Consider yourself forewarned.

Video of the Day 3/20/08

Holy Jeebus! Insane genius!

The Legendary Shack Shakers - Ichabod

Concert Poster of the Day 3/20/08

This is a perfect poster for these guys. It's got satanic splatter chickens in it.

The Legendary Shack Shakers (Mad Hatter '07)

Pick of the Day 3/19/08

Tonight's pick is coming all the way from Israel just to melt your facial region to the floor. Close your eyes and open your ears kids. I promise this won't hurt a bit.

Monotonix / Dark Meat @ Bottletree

Admission:8$
Go Time: 9PM

The last time Monotonix came to Bottletree, they wrecked the place, set the floor on fire, showered the audience in garbage, and it was hailed as one of the best shows of last year. Wanna be able to say the same thing about this year? Get moving.

Video of the Day 3/19/08

Wallow, my brothers! Revel in filth!

Monotonix - FXFU Live '07

Concert Poster of the Day 3/19/08

You got love posters that use the bands name in clever ways.

Monotonix (Macs Bar '08)

Pick of the Day 3/18/08

This is a music blog, so in the interest of staying on topic a little, I'll pick a band for you today. Know this though: Bottletree is having another Boardgame night tonight, and I'm gonna take the opportunity to get my Scrabble on. I have a beautiful board I want to rub in. If you're not inclined towards the wordtastic, and the idea of a bunch of people thoughtfully advancing miniature objects along colorful paths makes you nauseous, by all means go to:

The Jungle / Foreign Islands @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Get There: 10PM

See you across the table.

Video of the Day 3/18/08

Ha! Music and Scrabble together at last! Hurray indeed.

Kalan Porter - Hurray

Concert Poster of the Day 3/18/08

Of the two bands I picked tonight, Foreign Islands is more exciting, so they get the poster today.

Foreign Islands (Knitting Factory and Middle East '07)

Pick of the Day 3/17/08

Though I am tempted to send everyone to the sweaty dance orgy that Team Robespierre will supposedly be brewing at Bottletree tonight, I can't help but be seduced by the wiles of the two headlining ladies at Workplay:

You know Sara Bareilles. She's all over the place, most ubiquitously in that Rhapsody/Tivo ad seems to play every other commercial break. Ingrid Michaelson first stole my ears when she played Workplay a few months ago, and I've had her in regular rotation since then. There are three other acts on the bill besides these two, so you are definitly getting your money's worth with this ticket.

Video of the Day 3/17/08

Here's that song your subconcious has already absorbed:

Sara Bareilles - Love Song

Concert Poster of the Day 3/17/08

This is a tour poster for the show tonight, though it doesn't have all the same artists. Oh well.

Hotel Cafe Tour '08

Pick of the Day 3/12/08

It's been awhile since my last movie night, but tonight's is a film I've been wanting to see for a long time:

Gimme Shelter @ Bottletree

Admission: FREE
Go Time: 8PM

This documentary tells the story of The Rolling Stones disastrous 1969 tour, ending in the death of a young man at Altamont. This is a classic piece of Rock and Roll history, and you all should come and see it. How many times do I have to say FREE FREE FREE!

Video of the Day 3/12/08

A little taste of things to come:

Gimme Shelter Preview

Concert Poster of the Day 3/12/08

This is the actual poster for the Altamont concert in 1969. It's a little soft focus, but it's authentic dammit.

Rolling Stones (Altamont '69)

Pick of the Day 3/11/08

Suffocating gloom, thats what we get today instead of the soul-filling sunshine we've had the last few days. It's all good though, because tonight there is so much good music being played we might as well start a festival. Here's the best of the bunch:

Hoots & Hellmouth / The White Oaks @ Workplay

Admission: 5$
Party Starts: 8PM

Hoots and Hellmouth play soulfull footstompers as if the devil made them do it in a last ditch attempt to get back into God's good graces. Don't expect to stay seated. The White Oaks are a group of local fellas you'll kick yourself later for not seeing now. I have espoused my love for their sound previously. Not to mention the show is only five bucks, which is a steal for Workplay! What on Earth are you waiting for?

Honorable Mention: Dr. Dog / Blitzen Trapper / Fleet Foxes @ Bottletree

Video of the Day 3/11/08

I actually had trouble staying seated long enough to post this video up. It makes me want to dance too much.

Hoots & Hellmouth - This Hand Is A Mighty Hand

Concert Poster of the Day 3/11/08

This isn't tonight's poster, but it is from a White Oaks show at Workplay. Good enough, I tells ya!

The White Oaks / The Triceratops / Matthew Mayfield (Workplay '08)

Pick of the Day 3/10/08

It's another gorgeous day here in The Ham, and to celebrate such an occurence I suggest you head out to see:

Vampire Weekend @ The Bottletree

Admission: 14$ (SOLD OUT, but most likely available from a scalper)
Go Time: 9PM

These dudes are being hailed as one of the best new bands around, and they play perfect music for the beauty of a day we got goin' on here. If you don't have a ticket, I suggest you give finding one the old college try!

Video of the Day 3/10/08

Welcome to Smile-town. This song, this video, this day, all grin-inducing.

Vampire Weekend - APunk

Concert Poster of the Day 3/10/08

One funny poster. One silly blog writer. AH-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ahhhhh!

Vampire Weekend (Metro '08)

Pick of the Day 3/9/08

I've been waiting for this day. It's not often you get a chance to see a band as infinitely weird and cool as:

They Might Be Giants / Oppenheimer @ Workplay

Admission: ? (SOLD OUT but I'm sure you can barter with a scalper)
Go Time: 8PM

Most of you have probably heard of TMBG, in fact most of you have probably already purchased tickets to TMBG. Good, then you already know what you're in for. Weirdness and glory. Irish imports Oppenheimer make crafty pop numbers infused with crunchy synth lines and various other electronic bubbles and squeaks.

Video of the Day 3/9/08

I thought we could all use a taste of Oppenheimer to help prepare us for tonights shindig.

Oppenheimer - Saturday Looks Bad To Me

Concert Poster of the Day 3/9/08

I love the hand drawn look. I bet it's even better in large format. With a pencil and a box of markers, you too can make a kick-ass rock rag.

They Might Be Giants (Trustees Theatre '06)

Pick of the Day 3/8/08

Today's pick is:

The Big Sleep @ Bottletree

Admission:10$
Zero Hour: 9 p.m.

The Big Sleep is a strangly inappropriate name for a band that makes as much sheer noise as this one (though perhaps they’re channeling Chandler). It’s not all glorious feedback either. There are these fractured little moments of beauty sprinkled throughout, and they hit you all the harder because of the caustic nature of their surroundings.

Video of the Day 3/8/08

You should probably watch this before you head to the show tonight, because as much as I love being assaulted with noise, I realize it's not for everybody.

The Big Sleep - Murder

Concert Poster of the Day 3/8/08

Today's poster in crude'0'vision.

The Big Sleep (Local 506 '07)

Pick of the Day 3/7/08

No time for talk, here's the picks as quick as can be.

The Greencards / Andy Davis @ Workplay

Admission: $10
Go Time: 8:30 p.m.

The GreencardsThere’s a whole bucket of bluegrass coming to a theatre near you tonight in the form of 2008 Grammy Nominee The Greencards. If you like to stamp your feet and holler out at random tourettic intervals just for the soul of it all, then get your butt in gear. There’s pickin’ in your near future, I have see it in….the stars, yeah.

Andy Davis has got some sweet soul, though it’s a little slicker than I usually like. He does write a pretty little ditty though, there is no doubt about it. If you can get past the Barnes & Noble brand name, you’ll probably like what you hear. Probably.

Video of the Day 3/7/08

More Muppet sillyness.

The Muppet Show - Bird Chorus

Concert Poster of the Day 3/7/08

Prepare for poster entry in 5...4...3...2...1...

The Kinks (Antone's)

Pick of the Day 3/6/08

One of the benefits of doing these picks for you folks is that I get to discover all sorts of music I would never have otherwise noticed. And more often than not one of these discoveries turns out to be a really chunky nugget of goodness. Such is the case with our first band this weekend. Take a gander:

The Old Ceremony @ The Nick

Admission:
7$
Go Time: 10:00 p.m.

The Old Ceremony

Do me a favor, ok? Click on the link to The Old Ceremony just above this and listen to any one (or more) of the songs on their myspace page right now. I’ll wait here while you go……………..Ok, everyone back? Good. I shouldn’t need to say anything else. Enjoy yourselves, and I’ll see you at the show.

Video of the Day 3/6/08

Fun, fun, fun!!! I'll be whistling this one against my will today.

The Old Ceremony - Papers In Order

Concert Poster of the Day 3/6/08

This here is actually the poster for a show on Saturday somewhere else in the world. But it's got the band I want, and it's good to look at, so up it goes:

The Old Ceremony (Spanish Moon '08)
