Local music hero Reg (of Reg's Coffee House) recently had a surprise appearance on Conan O'Brian as My Morning Jacket's biggest fan. Neither Conan or James Lipton, who also appeared in the sketch, were aware that Reg is already good friends with the band, but that only adds to the funny. So, without further ado, Reg!

I love recommending shows at Roho, because you know the vittles are gonna be top notch. Of course, the music isn't bad either. Not bad at all.

Come one, come all and celebrate the debut release of a great local band:
The Monarchs / Duquette Johnston and the Rebel Kings @ Workplay
Admission: 8$
It Starts: 8PM
The Monarchs have been around for only a little while now, but they've played in all the right nooks and crannies. Tonight they release their very first effort The Oak EP. Backing them up is a man with his own new record in the works. This is the first time I've seen Duquette listed with his band The Rebel Kings, but that may be an omission in my memory. The band members are listed as being "anyone who comes by the recording studio, Alamalibu, to contribute to the new record", which means their could be any number of really great folks sitting in tonight.

1. They have a brand new Facebook page, so go over there and friend 'em, will ya?
2. They put a brand new song called "3 Car Garage" on their Myspace page, with promises of more to come. Keep 'em coming folks.

Wild Sweet Orange Gets Bumped
My friends over at The Terminal recently posted some annoying news: Local act Wild Sweet Orange's appearance on David Letterman, which was originally scheduled for tonight, has been pushed back until Friday. Those of you who were planning their evening around this (hardcore!) now have the opportunity to go check out the Russian Circles / Daughters show in today's Pick of the Day!
There is some good news included, so stop your weeping. Apparently, WSO has planned a CD release party for their upcoming album We Have Cause to Be Uneasy at Workplay on July 26th. Good to see the local boys who made good still supporting their roots.

Pick of the Day 6/24/08
I'm usually not a big fan of the kind of technical metal being featured tonight, but there's always an exception, and this one's about to start bitch slapping you around:
Russian Circles / Daughters @ Bottletree
Admission: 10$
Go Time: 9:30PM
Russian Circles make good instrumental music no doubt, especially to drink in a crowd to, but the real deal here is Daughters. These guys take technically proficient metal to a zany, careening height and then kick it in the nuts until it screams for mercy. Completely and utterly mesmerizing from the moment they begin until the moment you pass out from skull trauma.

Pick of the Day 6/23/08
No matter how sparse Monday is, it's a rare one that has a complete absence of good shows. Tonight is saved by:
Matthew Mayfield / David Ford @ Workplay
Admission: 10$
It Starts: 8PM
Matthew is a bright point of the scene, who made his initial mark with Moses Mayfield and is now scratching out a name for himself on his own. His brooding folk-rock has a seductive siren's charm, lifting you up before it brings you crashing back through into reality again. UK based songster David Ford brings lush looped arrangments to a usually spare singer-songwriter aesthetic. It's a little overwrought, but not dishonestly so, and listening to pretty music about terrible things is always an interesting exercise, especially when it's technically as interesting as this.

Pick of the Day 6/22/08
Sunday, SUNDAY, Sunday! Come on out and get your last licks in at:
Blue Moon @ The Burly Earl
Admission: ?
Get There: 7PM
I discovered these classic rockers at City Stages last weekend, and it looks like a few other people have recently too, because they are now playing every Sunday night at The Burly Earl for "Teen Night". Now, I know the prospect of a room full of sweaty teens may be enticing to some and anathema to others. Never the less, it's worth checking these fellas out, even if only for a little while.
On a side note, this is the first time I've picked a show at The Burly Earl. Hooray! Good music is spreading.

FUCK YEAH FEST: Matt & Kim / The Deathset / Monotonix / Team Robespierre / Comedian Reggie Watts @ Bottletree
Admission: 10$
Be There: 7PM
This might just be the night that Bottletree burns to the ground. Now, that would be a seriously bad thing for us all, but the group of bands playing tonight have caused fires, riots and various other joyful experiences right here in our little burg of ham. Enjoy!

Workplay is serving up another plate of smooth crooners for ya:
Joshua James / Justin Townes Earle / Lex Land @ Workplay
Admission: 10$
Zero Hour: 8PM
It's been a week for celebrity children, with Jakob Dylan on monday and now Justin Townes Earle, son of the "hardcore troubador" Steve Earle. Combine that with fragile, beautiful creations by Joshua James and Lex Land and warm glass of milk and you'll be chillville in no time at all.

Movie Night at Bottletree is here again. If you haven't been yet, you're missing one of the great free events in town:
Showgirls @ Bottletree
Admission: Free
Go Time: 9 PM
This movie once spawned a whole slew of controversy, got the conservative "values" folks frothing at the maw, and generally garnered quite a lot of attention for itself. Now it's become a campy cult flick, perfect for a night at the bar.

Whew, for those few hardcore music afficionados who are going out again tonight after a weekend of City Staging, I salute you! Here's what you got:
Jakob Dylan @ Workplay
Admission: $20
Get There: 8PM
Jakob Dylan is finally free of the Wallflowers, and out touring behind a Rick Ruben produced solo album Seeing Things. This is good and bad. The new stuff is solid acoustic singwriter folk, but if you wanted even a taste of rock 'n' roll in your evening, than look elsewhere.
