Reg on Conan

Local music hero Reg (of Reg's Coffee House) recently had a surprise appearance on Conan O'Brian as My Morning Jacket's biggest fan. Neither Conan or James Lipton, who also appeared in the sketch, were aware that Reg is already good friends with the band, but that only adds to the funny. So, without further ado, Reg!

Pick of the Day (6/30/08): Square Pegs @ Bottletree

Well, it's a bleak outlook tonight for the musically inclined. Guess we'll have to go with some alternative activites:

Craft Night / Square Pegs Marathon @ Bottletree

Admission: FREE
Time: 7PM

Craft night has been a reoccuring deal at Bottletree for a little while now, and tonight it's supplemented by a Square Pegs marathon. Square Pegs is a sit-com from the early eighties that starred Sarah Jessica Parker and ran for only one year. It's considered by some to be the inspiration for many of the later John Hughes films that realistically portray teen life, though this show is a lot more silly than those films.

Need a Square Pegs refresher? Here's a piece:

Concert Poster of the Day (6/30/08): Mudcrutch

Gotta love the old school flavor of this one:

Pick of the Day 6/29/08

Hey there, hamsters. It seems like the weekend barely even happened. Here we are and it's already Sunday. Oh well. At least there is good music to be had:

Les Nuby @ Rojo

Admission: FREE
Go Time: 6PM

I love recommending shows at Roho, because you know the vittles are gonna be top notch. Of course, the music isn't bad either. Not bad at all.

Honorable Mention: Bill Frisell Trio @ Bottletree

Here's a little video dig at internet celebrity done in catchy song form! How many of these have you seen?

Internet People - Dan Meth

Concert Poster of the Day 6/29/08

In keeping with my Internet Celebrity mini-theme today I thought an OK GO poster would be appropriate. They're even mentioned in today's video.

I just found the poster for tonight's show, so y'all get two posters today!

Wild Sweet Orange Letterman Pics

Wild Sweet Orange's stint on Letterman hasn't officially happened yet, but the fellas have thrown up some pics on their myspace anyway. Here they are:

Broken Letters: Now On CD!

Broken Letters recently announced via their myspace blog that they have released their debut album "Broken Letters Sing The Burning Alphabet" on CD. You can purchase it directly from thier page. No word yet if they will be offering it in local record stores, but here's hoping.

Pick of the Day 6/27/08

I've got a special one for you tonight folks:

Warning Track Records CD Release Show featuring

Vulture Whale / Matthew Mayfield / Sparrow @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Be There: 8PM

Relatively new Warning Track Records is releasing their first compilation CD, which is sure to be chock full of local goodness. To celebrate, they're throwing a shindig at Bottletree and you're all invited!

Also, don't forget that Wild Sweet Orange will be on Letterman tonight. It's their first national television appearance, so if you decide to stay home, make sure you tune in and support.

Honorable Mention: The Dirty Lungs @ The Nick

Video of the Day 6/26/08

I so enjoyed the Buddy System video I Had up a few days ago, I thought I'd put up another one:

Hot damn! I know it's not local, but this is great poster:

Pick of the Day 6/26/08

Blah blah blah, here it is:

Megafaun / Sworn Enemies @ Bottletree

Admission: 8$
Get Down: 9PM

I hope y'all are ready for some crunchy back woods goodness in the form of Sworn Enemies. Good, well then I hope y'all are ready for that crunch to mix with some decidedly tripped out goo in the form of Megafaun. Enjoy your schnozberries, freakcicles.

Video of the Day 6/26/08

Megafaun plays a little, reflects a little. Grows a little?

Megafaun @ Bull City HQ

Concert Poster of the Day 6/26/08

We've had a series of great local posters this week. Here's is the one from tonight's show:

Megafaun and Sworn Enemies @ Bottletree

Pick of the Day 6/25/08

Come one, come all and celebrate the debut release of a great local band:

The Monarchs / Duquette Johnston and the Rebel Kings @ Workplay

Admission: 8$
It Starts: 8PM

The Monarchs have been around for only a little while now, but they've played in all the right nooks and crannies. Tonight they release their very first effort The Oak EP. Backing them up is a man with his own new record in the works. This is the first time I've seen Duquette listed with his band The Rebel Kings, but that may be an omission in my memory. The band members are listed as being "anyone who comes by the recording studio, Alamalibu, to contribute to the new record", which means their could be any number of really great folks sitting in tonight.

Honorable Mention: Open Mic Night @ Bottletree

Video of the Day 6/25/08

A friend of mine introduced me to this video the other day, and it stuck:

Buddy System - Return To Horse Mountain

Teen Getaway Gets It On

r3vrb favorite Teen Getaway has made a couple of announcements recently:

1. They have a brand new Facebook page, so go over there and friend 'em, will ya?

2. They put a brand new song called "3 Car Garage" on their Myspace page, with promises of more to come. Keep 'em coming folks.

That's all for now...

Wild Sweet Orange Gets Bumped

My friends over at The Terminal recently posted some annoying news: Local act Wild Sweet Orange's appearance on David Letterman, which was originally scheduled for tonight, has been pushed back until Friday. Those of you who were planning their evening around this (hardcore!) now have the opportunity to go check out the Russian Circles / Daughters show in today's Pick of the Day!

There is some good news included, so stop your weeping. Apparently, WSO has planned a CD release party for their upcoming album We Have Cause to Be Uneasy at Workplay on July 26th. Good to see the local boys who made good still supporting their roots.

Pick of the Day 6/24/08

I'm usually not a big fan of the kind of technical metal being featured tonight, but there's always an exception, and this one's about to start bitch slapping you around:

Russian Circles / Daughters @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Go Time: 9:30PM

Russian Circles make good instrumental music no doubt, especially to drink in a crowd to, but the real deal here is Daughters. These guys take technically proficient metal to a zany, careening height and then kick it in the nuts until it screams for mercy. Completely and utterly mesmerizing from the moment they begin until the moment you pass out from skull trauma.

Video of the Day 6/24/08

Daughters cracking faces like eggs.

Daughters - Recorded Inside A Pyramid

Concert Poster of the Day 6/24/08

I have to say, this is one of the best posters to come out of Bottletree yet:

Russian Circles and Daughters (Bottletree '08)

Pick of the Day 6/23/08

No matter how sparse Monday is, it's a rare one that has a complete absence of good shows. Tonight is saved by:

Matthew Mayfield / David Ford @ Workplay

Admission: 10$
It Starts: 8PM

Matthew is a bright point of the scene, who made his initial mark with Moses Mayfield and is now scratching out a name for himself on his own. His brooding folk-rock has a seductive siren's charm, lifting you up before it brings you crashing back through into reality again. UK based songster David Ford brings lush looped arrangments to a usually spare singer-songwriter aesthetic. It's a little overwrought, but not dishonestly so, and listening to pretty music about terrible things is always an interesting exercise, especially when it's technically as interesting as this.

Video of the Day 6/23/08

Here's a really good example of David Ford doing his song-building thing:

David Ford - Go To Hell

Concert Poster of the Day 6/23/08

I couldn't find a headliner for David Ford, but here's the next best:

David Ford (Avalon '06)

Pick of the Day 6/22/08

Sunday, SUNDAY, Sunday! Come on out and get your last licks in at:

Blue Moon @ The Burly Earl

Admission: ?
Get There: 7PM

I discovered these classic rockers at City Stages last weekend, and it looks like a few other people have recently too, because they are now playing every Sunday night at The Burly Earl for "Teen Night". Now, I know the prospect of a room full of sweaty teens may be enticing to some and anathema to others. Never the less, it's worth checking these fellas out, even if only for a little while.

On a side note, this is the first time I've picked a show at The Burly Earl. Hooray! Good music is spreading.

Video of the Day 6/22/08

Blue Moon....I saw you rocking alone...

Pick of the Day 6/21/08

Oh baby! It's time for one more of Bottletree's periodic festivals of awesome:

FUCK YEAH FEST: Matt & Kim / The Deathset / Monotonix / Team Robespierre / Comedian Reggie Watts @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Be There: 7PM

This might just be the night that Bottletree burns to the ground. Now, that would be a seriously bad thing for us all, but the group of bands playing tonight have caused fires, riots and various other joyful experiences right here in our little burg of ham. Enjoy!

Video of the Day 6/21/08

Upbeat Deathset:

The Deathset - Negative Thinking

Alright kiddies, don't forget to eat a bowl of Fuck Yeah before you go to school!

Fuck Yeah Fest (Bottletree '08)

Pick of the Day 6/20/08

We're almost to the weekend folks, just hold on a little longer! Here's some novacaine for your work week pain:

Brass Bed / Hotel Palatine / Stale Fashion / Baak Gwai @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Go Time: 10PM

This is a great deal here! Four decent bands for a piddling amount of cash. The real stand out is old r3vrb favorite Baak Gwai. Those dudes melt shoelace.

Video of the Day 6/20/08

Here's a neat video of Baak Gwai hacking it out in studio land:

I found this neat tour poster that works perfectly for today, because it's got Baak Gwai and Stale Fashion on it.

Pick of the Day 6/19/08

Workplay is serving up another plate of smooth crooners for ya:

Joshua James / Justin Townes Earle / Lex Land @ Workplay

Admission: 10$
Zero Hour: 8PM

It's been a week for celebrity children, with Jakob Dylan on monday and now Justin Townes Earle, son of the "hardcore troubador" Steve Earle. Combine that with fragile, beautiful creations by Joshua James and Lex Land and warm glass of milk and you'll be chillville in no time at all.

So whispery.

Another poster for a band I caught last weekend at City Stages:

Pick of the Day 6/18/08

Movie Night at Bottletree is here again. If you haven't been yet, you're missing one of the great free events in town:

Showgirls @ Bottletree

Admission: Free
Go Time: 9 PM

This movie once spawned a whole slew of controversy, got the conservative "values" folks frothing at the maw, and generally garnered quite a lot of attention for itself. Now it's become a campy cult flick, perfect for a night at the bar.

Honorable Mention: The Big Tasties @ Bailey's Pub

Video of the Day 6/18/08

This teaser seems ridiculous once you've actually seen the movie.

I saw Blind Melon last weekend at City Stages, and they weren't half bad!

Pick of the Day 6/17/08

Okay, you all can take a much needed break today. Gather your stuffed animals around you and head to happy nap land. Ta!

Pick of the Day 6/16/08

Whew, for those few hardcore music afficionados who are going out again tonight after a weekend of City Staging, I salute you! Here's what you got:

Jakob Dylan @ Workplay

Admission: $20
Get There: 8PM

Jakob Dylan is finally free of the Wallflowers, and out touring behind a Rick Ruben produced solo album Seeing Things. This is good and bad. The new stuff is solid acoustic singwriter folk, but if you wanted even a taste of rock 'n' roll in your evening, than look elsewhere.

Honorable Mention: Craft Night @ Bottletree
