Pick of the Day 11/30/08: Sleepytime

Another restful Sunday without music, so that we can recharge our batteries before the onslaught of the work week.

Video of the Day (11/30/08): The Obvious Threat

Don't get too sleepy now. Here's something a little creepy to keep you breathing:

The Obvious Threat - Team Extreme

Here you go, you ravenous masses you:

Pick of the Day (11/29/08): The Monarchs

Yay! The end of the week picks up the beginnings slack.

Monarchs / The Magic Math / The Dirty Lungs / The Triceratops @ The Nick

Admission: 6$
Starting: 10PM

Props, kudos, and many other platitudes to the Nick for it's recent spat of great local band shows. Way to keep the flame burning!

Video of the Day (11/29/08): Missionary

I love it when you find a video that tells a whole story without dialogue.

Missionary - Mike A. Smith

Concert Poster of the Day (11/29/08): Phil Moore Browne

The colors in this one are great:

Pick of the Day (11/28/08): The Duke Spirit

Now that we've all gotten through with gut busting, let's bust a move:

The Duke Spirit / Eulogies / The Black Forties @ Bottletree

Admission: 12$
Zero Hour: 8PM

The Duke Spirit comes to you from across that large wet thing boats float on. They're spending their time here in very cool company, including The Eagles of Death Metal. Won't you come and stand a spell in their presence.

Video of the Day (11/28/08): The Duke Spirit

Pick of the Day (11/27/08): The Grenadines

Happy Turkey Day everyone! As a present for you, The Nick has cooked up a show, and in a week as empty as this one has been, that's a grand gift indeed.

The Grenadines
/ Kate Taylor @ The Nick

Admission: 6$
Its Starts: 10PM

You should have recovered from your fowl induced coma by 10PM, so no excuses. Escape from that weird uncle and rock your woes away at The Nick.

Video of the Day (11/27/08): Let's Talk Turkey

You know, Christmas has all these cheesy videos that every one ritually watches at Holiday time, but Thanksgiving has a paltry amount by comparison. Here's one I think we could all get into (plus a random bonus video):

Let's Talk Turkey by Vincent Waller

Concert Poster of the Day (11/27/08): The Details

Gross.

Pick of the Day (11/26/08): Pre-Gorge Meditation

I guess everyone is taking this time to prepare for the sheer volume of food they are preparing to shovel into their gullets tomorrow. Good luck people!

Video of the Day (11/26/08): Helium

Another cute and twisted pic:

Pick of the Day (11/25/08): Eerie Silence

I know it's a Holiday Week, but I thought we'd make it until Wednesday with music. Oh well. Try not to wonder what that creaking coming out of the basement is.

Video of the Day (11/25/08): Breezer

This video was done by The Brothers McLeod, who are some of my favorite animators.

Breezer - I'm Just Badly Misplaced

Concert Poster of the Day (11/25/08): Tapes N Tapes

Angular and colorful enough to catch your eye on:

Tapes N Tapes (Tour Poster '08) * by Little Jacket

Pick of the Day (11/24/08): The So So Glos

So, as far as I know, this is the first official Cave 9 show at Greencup Books. I think this is a great move. These are two great forces for local music who are struggling to get by. Perhaps if they combine powers, and we all show up for a change, this will be the beginning of something beautiful.

The So-So Glos / PS Eliot / Spells / Henry Dunkle @ Greencup Books

Admission: 4$
Go Time: 8PM

Three of these bands are Hamsters, and The So So Glos are from Brooklyn. You can get your familiar and your foreign kicks all in one go! When has 4 bands for 4 bucks ever really been a bad deal?

Honorable Mention:

John Cardiel's "Epicly Later'd" @ Bottletree

Video of the Day (11/24/08): The So So Glos

Loud good punk.

So So Glos - Black and Blue LIVE

Concert Poster of the Day (11/24/08): The So So Glos

Pick of the Day 11/23/08: Necessary Rest

It's only fitting that after such a marvelous week of music we should get Sunday off to recuperate. Take a long nap everyone, and I'll see you next week.

Video of the Day (11/23/08): Deep Six

Underwater action set to a chill beat:

Deep Six - Vance Reeser

Concert Poster of the Day 11/23/08): Yellow Swans

I have no idea who this band is, but I love this poster:

Pick of the Day 11/22/08: Iron & Wine

Holy Jeebus I've been waiting a long time for today.

Iron & Wine / Blitzen Trapper @ Workplay

Admission: 25$
Go Time: 8PM

I always had trouble with Iron & Wine, specifically with the bleakness. That all changed with their latest album, Shepherd's Dog. That thing is a work of genius.

Video of the Day (11/22/08): Iron & Wine

Pick of the Day 11/21/08: Teen Getaway

Greencup Books strikes again!

Teen Getaway / Liquid Brick / Green Seed @ Greencup Books

Admission: 4$
Begins: 9PM

Seriously, Greencup Books is my new favorite place on earth. I still love you Bottletree, but I hope you like threesome's. This is a Teen Getaway CD RELEASE show, so you know they're gonna bring the freak! Also, the last time I saw The Green Seed, they stole the show. There will be adult beverages available.

Honorable Mention:

The Broken Letters / P.S. Eliot @ Cave 9
>Quintron / >Thomas Function @ >Bottletree

Video of the Day (11/21/08): Swing

A Public Service Announcment:

Danger Pies - The Brothers McLeod

Concert Poster of the Day 11/21/08): Mogwai

Found a good one:

Pick of the Day 11/20/08: The Grenadines

Tonight promises to be a different beast:

The Grenadines / Nag Hammadi @ Bottletree

Admission: 6$
Zero Hour: 9PM

Middle-eastern rock with dancing and drumgasms for all. Plus The Grenadines, which is always worth the earspace. Let's hope they bring the fire dancers!

Video of the Day (11/20/08): Swing

Sweet and beautiful.

Swing - Esteban Azuela

Concert Poster of the Day 11/20/08): The Black Keys

When in doubt look to The Black Keys for a cool poster:

The Black Keys (Brixton Academy '08) * by Dan Grzeca

Pick of the Day 11/19/08: The Howlies

I am so glad I finally stumbled onto Greencup and their live music schedule. They have a killer line up this month, and tonight is one of the best:

The Howlies / The Dirty Lungs @ Greencup Books

Admission: 4$
Go Time: 8PM

Two rockin' bands, one from Atlanta and one from the 'Ham. Separate they rock, together they shall destroy our lobes with sheer greatness.

Video of the Day (11/19/08): The Howlies

This video is a bit discombobulated, but still a good representation:

The Howlies LIVE @ The Earl

Concert Poster of the Day 11/19/08): The Black Crowes

In honor of their recent stint in Birmingham:

The Black Crowes (The National '08) * by Mark Brye

Pick of the Day 11/18/08: The Asylum Street Spankers

Today was a real mind bender. On one hand you've got bawdy Americana, and on the other you've got schizophrenic avant-metal. I'm going with #1, cause it's fun to write spankers. Spankers.

The Asylum Street Spankers @ Bottletree

Admission: 12$
It Starts: 8PM

Seriously folks, sexual innuendos and all, these guys are top-notch musicians and funny as hell. Everyone there will leave with sore sides and laugh lines. I must say that the honorable mention tonight is just as good as the main pick. Make sure you check them both out.

Honorable Mention:

Gaylord @ The Nick

Video of the Day (11/18/08): Gaylord

Lengthy and amazing Gaylord video:

White Oaks Photos

Hey all, sorry it's taken so long, but I wanted to post these photos I took from The White Oaks CD Release gig last week. It was a great one! The new songs sound fancy and fine, and after the viewing of a short movie they soundtracked and a play through of those new tracks, they really kicked it through by burning their older material into red-hot embers of sweet goodness. Have a gander, and sorry there's not more! I was too busy having a good time to remember to photograph anything.

Pick of the Day 11/17/08: Duquette Johnston

Monday has been consistently good for a while now. Let's see if today meets the standard:

Phosphorescent / Virgin Forests / Duquette Johnston @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Be There: 8PM

We've all fared quite well, as it turns out. Duquette is opening, but he gets the post header 'cause he's local, and 'cause frankly he kicks a little more ass. And if that's not up to par for ya, then check out this --->

Honorable Mention:

Amos Lee / Priscilla Ahn @ Workplay

Video of the Day (11/17/08): Phosphorecent

Here's a little taste of the headliner of tonight's pick:

Phosphorescent - Wolves

Concert Poster of the Day 11/17/08): Phosphorescent

This is the poster for tonight's pick:

Phosphorescent (Bottletree '08) * by ?

Pick of the Day (11/16/08): Indecisive Procrastination

Not much to see tonight. There's a charity thing being held to raise money to help fight Breast Cancer tonight at Bottletree. It's called "Get Inked For Pink", and there will be a number of bands. They're also going to have a tattoo artist there, but I don't think he's handing out tats at the gig. It could be a good time, but I'm not sure about the bands, so I'm not doing an official pick. Still, 8PM - 10$ if you want to check it out. See you next week!

Video of the Day (11/16/08): Telemetry Orchestra

Love the flickering cut 'n paste!

Telemetry Orchestra - Under The Cherry Tree

Concert Poster of the Day (11/16/08): Fleet Foxes

Simple, yes. Stark, no. Beautiful, maybe.

Fleet Foxes (The Drunken Unicorn '08) * by Us & Company Design

Pick of the Day (11/15/08): The Rosewood Thieves

Saturday brings back some standing after abandoning us last week:

The Rosewood Thieves / Ponderosa / The Hotel Palatine @ The Nick

Admission: 6$
It Starts: 10PM

While Bottletree is busy blasting our eardrums into the Mesozoic tonight, and The Alabama hosts The Black Crowes, The Nick has put together a tasty little rock show to entertain us with. I'd say all three of these bands merit a go see, though The Rosewood Thieves are the most intriguing.

Honorable Mention:

The Black Crowes / Buffalo Killers @ The Alabama Theatre
The Dexateens @ Zydeco

Video of the Day (11/15/08): The Rosewood Thieves

Anyone else hear the Dylan in this?

The Rosewood Thieves - Junkyard Julie

Concert Poster of the Day (11/15/08): Vampire Weekend

Gross!! Awesome!!!

Vampire Weekend (In The Venue '08) * by Potter Press

Pick of the Day (11/14/08): The White Oaks (CD RELEASE)

Today was a no-brainer. This is a must attend show for anyone with an inkling of interest in local music.

The White Oaks / Through the Sparks / John P. Strohm @ Workplay

Admission: 10$
Zero Hour: 9PM

I have been anxiously awaiting this release, and I'm sure these guys are gonna kick it off with gusto. I'll see you there!
