Pick of the Day 4/30/08

We've got a big one tonight! Gotta love Bottletree for gettin' the red hot up and comers:

Tapes and Tapes / White Denim @ Bottletree

Admission: 12$
Go There: 9PM

Tapes and Tapes rose to relative fame via the love of various bloggers (go bloggers!), and have since performed in all sorts of cool places. Wanna be in the know? Than know this: get to this show, or you are a lame-o. Maybe I'm the lame-o for putting the pressure on. So...by all means stay home and work on your super un-lame macaroni collage.

This is the poster for tonights show. Why is hot pink such a rockin' color. It goes against everything I believe in! Namely the suckiness of pink.

This is great jam. It's groovy, uplifting and rockin'.

Little Feat @ Workplay

All I have to say is:

Waiting for Guffman

One of the greatest funny movies of all time. Period.

Enjoy, fizzentleman and fizzadies.

Raindrop Music Festival (Bottletree '08)

Pick of the Day 4/23/08

Today's picks are good for your soul, unlike stupid proclamations.

Susan Tedeschi / The Lee Boys @ Workplay

Admission: 24$
Go Time: 8PM

I love it when ladies holler the blues, and Susan Tedeschi does it well. The Lee Boys are purveyors of a particular kind of gospel called Sacred Steel, and it'll warm your frigid heart, I swear it to be so.

Video of the Day 4/23/08

Sing to me now, that the ills of the world may slide from my weary shoulders.

Susan Tedeschi - Little By Little

Old gas pumps are neat. I'm having a little trouble with my prose today. Be content with these half-formed mumblings.

Susan Tedeschi (The Fillmore '01)

Pick of the Day 4/22/08

It's been upliftingly beautiful the last few days, the kind of gorgeous that can drag you out of a funk. Let's celebrate our day by filling our night with good music:

It Starts: 8PM

Both of these folks play the perfect tunes to hear after a romp in the park. It's upbeat, it's got a little flow and a little funk. Smiles for everyone!

Hey hey, la la la. Videos abound, love all around.

Pick of the Day 4/21/08

Another movie night is upon us, and what a weird cult classic they've selected for us:

Road House
@ Bottletree

Admission: FREE
Go Time: 8PM

To quote Bottletree's excellent intro:

"Road House is one of those films you spend about two hours watching and never really understand what is happening but you're too entertained to care. It is about Dalton (Swayze), the greatest bouncer, who has come to a small road house to instill order. He cleans up the bar's poor crop of bouncers and manages to fall in love with the town doctor. All the while, pissing off the local crime boss. Monster trucks, tons of breasts, kung fu, and a blind guitarist later, you still don't have to think to be amused. All in all, Road House is the perfect movie to do just about anything too because it has everything a good time requires."
There you have it. Have at it.

Pick of the Day 4/20/08

Happy 4-20 everyone!

Today's pick was an easy one:

Patterson Hood (of Drive-By Truckers) and Elliott McPherson (of The Dexateens) @ Workplay

Admission: 15$
Get There: 8PM

Patterson Hood is a regional rock hero, and Elliot Mcpherson is a local rock hero, and I'm a virtual rock hero, and you're a nascent rock hero. We should all get together tonight at Workplay and talk about how much we all kick-ass.

Sorry, no videos or posters today. Busy bees need rest.

Pick of the Day 4/19/08

There's certainly a lot of variety in town today, what with Bottletree having a mini-fest. The two bands I really want to see are somewhere else, though:

Dexateens / Teen Getwaway @ The Nick

Admission: $7
Zero Hour: 10 p.m.

13 GhostsTeen Getaway

The Dexateens
recently released a new album and they’re giving it away for FREE online! Go download you some of these rascals from Tuscaloosa, and then make it out to the show tonight, cause I’m sure they’ll be playing some of the new tracks. Life is good. Free is good.

As if the Dexateens show wasn’t enough, they’ve been paired with another of my favorite local bands. Teen Getaway have played with most of the great local acts, but they don’t play a ton of shows, so you should definitely make the most of this opportunity to catch them.

Honorable Mention: Amplifest II @ Bottletree

Pick of the Day 4/18/08

What's up folks! It's a beautiful day, and I've got my grin on. Still frowny? Get out to tonight's pick:

Dan Wilson @ Workplay

Admission: 15$
Go Time: 8 p.m.

Dan Wilson

Dan Wilson recorded his first solo album last year (with the help of Rick Rubin), but he already has a couple of Grammy’s under his belt. He wrote the hit song “Closing Time” for the band Semisonic, and was also a big part of the songwriting team for The Dixie Chicks critically acclaimed album “Taking the Long Way”. What’s nice about all this is that his music feels instantly familiar, though I haven’t heard it before.

Video of the Day 4/18/08

This is the video for Beck's new track. Conscientious and rockalicious.

Beck - Timebomb

Pick of the Day 4/17/08

Hey guys, sorry I've been scattered lately. I'm running out of time again so I'm gonna point you to The Terminal, where my picks should be up in the timetable shortly. Catch ya on the flipside.

Pick of the Day 4/16/08

There was a show at Workplay I was interested in, but it got cancelled so I'm going with:

The Big Tasties @ Bailey's Pub

Admission: Free
Go Time: 10PM

Come out for the local lords of funktastic jamdom, stay for the cheap booze. Or the other way around, your choice.

Video of the Day 4/16/08

In keeping with recent tradition, I am providing a video from one of the new album releases I've been absorbing.

Counting Crows - 1492

Concert Poster of the Day 4/16/08

Counting Crows. Mounting Trolls. Mouthing Foals. Pouting Souls. Rowdy Poles.

Counting Crows (NYC Town Hall '07)

Pick of the Day 4/14/08

Time for another great movie night:

Grass @ Bottletree

Admission: Free
Go Time: 8PM

This 1999 film is narrated by Woody Harrelson, and covers the history of marijuana in the United States using mostly archival footage of propaganda films. It recieved critical acclaim, and should be good viewing for the baked and unbaked alike.

Pick of the Day 4/12/08

I'm running short on time today, so I'm not going to be able to post the video or concert poster until later in the day. Here are the picks:

13 Ghosts / Kate Taylor @ Bottletree

Admission:
$8
Zero Hour: 9 p.m.

13 GhostsKate Taylor

13 Ghosts just released their creepy new album The Strangest Colored Lights to critical acclaim, and local label Skybucket Records is celebrating it with a kick-off party here in their hometown. Always a good time live, I’m sure the fellas are gonna kick it up a level for the special occasion.

Kate Taylor is a label mate of 13 Ghosts, so it’s not surprising that she gets the nod. She plays pleasant and heartfelt acoustic numbers which should be a nice warm-up before 13 Ghosts takes the mood down a notch. I should point out that today’s honorable mention is Art Garfunkel, but he doesn’t get the full treatment because I believe in supporting the locals when they’re as good as these guys are. Do what you will.

Honorable Mention: Art Garfunkel @ Alys Stephens Center

Pick of the Day 4/11/08

Pick time:

moe. @ Workplay

Admission: SOLD OUT
Go Time: 9 p.m.

moe.

I realize this show is sold out, but with a band of this caliber it’s possible that you’ll be able to find a ticket through Stubhub, Craigs List or a scalper. moe. are a legendary jam band who never fail to provide a killer live show. If you can scare up the tix, you’ll have a grand ol’ time, I garauntee. If you can’t, check out the honorable mention section for another great choice.

Honorable Mention: Part Bear @ The Nick

Video of the Day 4/11/08

This was apparently the winner of contest to make a moe. video!

Tailspin - moe.

I found a lot of great moe. posters when I was diggin', but here's my favorite.

moe. (Highline Ballroom '07)

Pick of the Day 4/10/08

The secret purpose of this blog is to force me to discover great new local music, and today it has accomplished that goal handily:

The Strife Rifle @ The Nick

Admission: 7$
Go Time: 10:00 p.m.

The Strife Rifle

Here's your chance to catch a great new band before they break. The Strife Rifle have Otis Redding listed as their first influence on myspace, and it's no wonder once you get a taste of lead singer Paul Janeway's soulful vocals. These smooth blues rockers are some of the best I've heard out of Birmingham, so make sure you all come out for it. Get there on time, because they're opening for a bunch of other cats (who weren't worth much of a mention).

Honorable Mention:
Sons of Roswell @ Cafe Firenze

Video of the Day 4/10/08

Since it was recently announced they they will be playing City Stages, I thought I'd honor The Flaming Lips with today's video:

The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song - The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips (The OKC Zoo '06)

Pick of the Day 4/9/08

Wow, I've never seen the schedule this empty on a Wednesday before. If you must go out, head to:

Jubal and the Kings Of Swing @ Marty's

Admission: Free
Go Time: 10PM

I'm sure Jubal ( a Member of Kendra Sutton's band) will be decent, and Marty's has a great cheeseburger. Mmmmmmm, cheeseburger.

P.S. - FREE!!!

Video of the Day 4/9/08

Did Ringo Starr really ask Wilson Pickett about the meaning of soul? Wilson was a notorious crazy person. Makes for a good story though. Listen to him scream!

I picked this Bottletree poster mainly for the colors, and for whatever dark whims may lurk beneath the surface of my mind.

Rogue Wave (Bottletree '07)

Pick of the Day 4/8/08

There's a band with a lot of who's who playing at The Nick, but honestly, I'm just not into the sound. It sounds a tad generic to me, and that's the last thing you can say about the bands at Bottletree:

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone / Clue To Kalo / A Crimson Dynamo @ Bottletree

Admission: 10$
Starts: 9PM

All three of these bands play subdued melodic ditties. CFTPA mixes it up by incorporating old Casiotone keyboards (surprise, surprise). Clue To Kalo are all the way from Australia and A Crimson Dynamo are all the way from your backyard. Happy listening.

Video of the Day 4/8/08

Lucky Australians! Look what they get to use as a backdrop for their music videos.

Clue To Kalo - The Just Is Enough

Concert Poster of the Day 4/8/08

Creepy keyboards and great colors! This is tonight's poster.

CFTPA - Clue To Kalo - A Crimson Dynamo (Bottletree '08)

Pick of the Day 4/7/08

I'm a little wary of sending everyone to Bottletree tonight, because the subject matter of the film they are showing for movie night is a little incendiary:

For The Bible Tells Me So @ Bottletree

Admission: Free
Go Time: 8PM

This film recieved a 93% rating from Rotten Tomatoes, which is an incredibly high rating, so I think the issue will be handled with sensitivity and intelligence. Props to Bottletree for showing difficult material.

Here's a little educational cartoon from For The Bible Tells Me So. If it fills you with an uncontrollable rage, please stay home.

Pick of the Day 4/6/08

Hello all. Im stuck out in the boonies with no computer so I am posting this from my phone. I wont be able to give you all the links and pics I normally do. I also havent been able to listen to everything, so all I can say is local band The Great Book of John is playing Bottletree. Click on their link in my new local bands page to check them out.

See y'all tomorrow.

Pick of the Day 4/5/08

Today is a real occasion here Birmingham. Here's why:

Admission: $12
Zero Hour: 9 p.m.

I know a lot of people are going to shake their mugs at me in confusion when I point them in the direction of Bottletree tonight. After all, Diana Krall is playing elsewhere in the city. Well, for all you naysayers out there I’ve provided info for her show in the honorable mention section. For my part, I’d rather bask in the golden glow of some old soul. Ralph “Soul” Jackson was known for some great but obscure singles back in soul’s heyday, but he’s still got it, and I want some.

Roscoe Robinson was performing gospel for twenty years before he even recorded his first soul single, and has a celebrated and lengthy career since then. He’s recorded over 20 singles and 7 albums in that time and performed with the likes of Sam Cooke and The Blind Boys Of Alabama. This guy is a legend, and you should take the opportunity to see him NOW.

Herbert Wiley quit playing music after a dozen years on the road in the 60’s, but was inspired by a local punk band in 2002 to reform his band Wiley and the Checkmates. Since then, they’ve been storming around the Southeast to great acclaim.

Honorable Mention:

Diana Krall @ Alys Stephens Center

Pick of the Day 4/4/08

Workplay scores again! Huzzah!

Blue Mountain @ Workplay

Admission: 10$
Go Time: 9 p.m.

Blue Mountain

With a name like Blue Mountain, I was expecting another bluegrass band, but while this band definitely leans that way, they are first and foremost a rock band (with fiddle and banjo). These gays and gals have been around for almost two decades now, and they’ve honed their song sense into a tight sound chock full of electric grass n’ roll.

Video of the Day 4/4/08

Here's Blue Mountain breaking it down. The footage and sound are pretty good, considering it's candid.

Blue Mountain - Bloody 98

Concert Poster of the Day 4/4/08

Here's an oddity. This is a Blue Mountain poster from a show at Bottletree, not Workplay.

Blue Mountain (Bottletree '07)

Pick of the Day 4/3/08

Pick pickaroo, pick pickaroo, pick pick paroo.

Tea Leaf Green / Cornmeal @ Workplay

Admission: 15$
Go Time: 8:00 p.m.

Tea Leaf GreenCornmeal

Teal Leaf Green have had a quick rise into the lime-light, moving from tiny venues to playing The Fillmore auditorium in their hometown of San Fransisco in just a few years based on the strength of their engaging live performances. It’s not gonna blow your mind, but it certainly will move your feet.

When I think of music coming out of Chicago, bluegrass isn’t the first thing that pops into mind, but that hasn’t stop the Windy City natives Cornmeal from breaking out the banjos and fiddles for a good ol’ fashioned get down.

Video of the Day 4/3/08

I wonder if Tea Leaf Green is a veiled reference for something? What could it be?

Pick of the Day 4/2/08

It's been a little while since I last picked a Bottletree Movie night, which is the fault of all of the marvelous live music we've had in the last few weeks. Well, welcome back Goosechacha. We're glad to have ya.

Darkon @ Bottletree

Admission: FREE!
